Using Google Gemini to create a polymetric sequencer for the Monome Norns.

NARF is an emulation of the Buchla 251e / Orthogonal Devices ER-101 sequencer workflow brought to midi via the Monome Norns ecosystem.

I had a desire to vibecoding a full project with an LLM, and a standalone Lua script seemed like a straightforward approach for a first project.

Buchla modules are extremely expensive, and the OD ER-101 has been out of production for some time now, so a software emulation seemed like the best way to explore that sequencing workflow.

Overall, the vibecoding the app was pretty easy. The base logic came together quickly, as did integration with the Norns ecosystem. However, UI/UX was an issue, as although Gemini could effectively draw and animate the screen, it wasn’t able to hone in on ideal controls and text display, event after multiple corrections. I ended up manually writing a fair bit of the UX code.

NARF is available and hosted by norns.community for easy installation using maiden.
